Sailing Stories and New Blog

If you want to read more about our sailing adventures, I've got one pretty crazy story called "Pissing on Dave's Feet" in What Color is your Jockstrap? (Travelers' Tales, 2006).

I also have another story, "Thar She Blows!," coming out in More Sand in my Bra this spring (Travelers' Tales, 2007).

Now that we're landlubbers, I'm blogging for the Seattle PI at:
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/HappilyEvenAfter
It's a blog for 30-somethings about living "happily even after" you've fulfilled the fairy tale promise of getting hitched...and the reality of life with a partner, job, mortgage, and dog (oh, and maybe a kid, too!) sets in.

Finally, I also have a new website at:
http://web.mac.com/jannacawrse

Fair winds,
janna

P.S. Not sure why the format here is so screwy...and if those links don't work, you can access them in the sidebar. My inability to navigate the technical aspects of this blog is one very good reason for jumping ship...

Dragonfly's Blog has a New Look!

You may notice that we've finally taken advantage of Blogspot's nifty new templates. This one's a bit better than the user-unfriendly format we had before. We're not writing here much anymore, though, as we're no longer cruising the world. But we are still sailing Dragonfly a ton--just closer to home. Perhaps we'll get some more stories up eventually. In the meantime, if any of our previous posts inspire you with planning your own voyage, then we've done our job. (And I figured out how to enable comments, so feedback is welcome!)

I'm starting a new blog to track my landlubber writer's life at www.jannasgist.com. Travel tales, book reviews, and other miscellanea that comes along. Feel free to drop in.

Fair winds,
Janna

P.S. Back when we were cruising, all the posts were automatically filed under Graeme's name. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to change that. Anyway, it's pretty clear from each post who is actually at the helm on that particular day. Enjoy!

Our new deckhand has arrived!

Talia Cawrse Esarey and her first boat ride.

Look Mom, no life jacket!

Sailboats and Container Ships

The good news is that Dragonfly is underway again. This looks to be her fastest passage ever, too, by the look of it. 6000 miles in 11 days. Even PlayStation would have her hands full keeping up, but then Dragonfly is on the back of a container ship. And we are moving home.

Janna actually moved back to the States in December, and I wrapped up my consulting gig and took a job in Seattle. Our new girl, Talia Cawrse Esarey came along March 15, the day I returned from Hong Kong. What a joy she is.

So thus ends the tale of this adventure. Family life calls to us now. But so does the sea. My hunch is that it won't be long before this family is off crusing again, even if we only go as far as the San Juans, or Vancouver Island. Or Alaska. Or...?

New-fangled Thingy

So, a couple months ago Graeme and I were visiting Shanghai and they had these new-fangled thingies for sale that we'd thought we'd test out. It was a contraption the size of a Bic pen and it was supposed to let you know how your addition skills were. It was exciting, it was new, so I thought, what the hey! I'll give it a try.

I followed the directions as best I could. First, I blew on it but nothing happened. Then I licked it; didn't taste so good. I tried to coax it with soothing words and encouragement, much like a gardener does to her beloved plants. No luck. Out of desperation, I stuck this dang thinga-ma-bob into every orifice I could think of. Quite exciting, but still no go. Finally, I sat down and pissed on the damn thing and, in a last-ditch effort, enveloped it with a fart as loud as a firecracker. (Did I mention the instructions were in Chinese?)

From outside the bathroom Graeme heard my efforts and asked how things were going. I looked down and, lo and behold, the thing was changing color! It was working! A tiny blue "plus" sign was emerging on the thinga-ma-bob's surface. (I think it was the fart that did it.)

So, the long and the short of it is, our efforts at addition and multiplication and such have been confirmed. We're pregnant. Or rather, I'm pregnant and Graeme is holding up well to life with a blimping crazy woman. YIPEE! I'm due April 2nd. We'll have the lil' nugget in Hong Kong, and we're not exactly sure what the plan is after that. Sailing across the North Pacific might no longer be in the cards for next spring. But at least we're getting new crew for Dragonfly!

Hmmm...it occurs to me that for some of you, we dropped off the planet once we got to the Philippines many months ago. I guess I should add that last spring, after much deliberation, we decided to live and work in Hong Kong for a year. We were tired of moving 1,000 miles a month. We now live on Dragonfly in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour. Neon skyscrapers have taken the place of palm trees and white sand beaches. We love it here! Graeme has started a consulting business here; he helps American companies who want to do business in China (sourcing products, business start-up and optimization, etc.). I'm writing fulltime. You can see an article of mine in Blue Water Sailing's October issue (won't be on the stands much longer) and I'm working on a series of articles for them about male/female dynamics at sea. But now that this new-fangled thingy has entered our lives, we are here, not just to work, but to become parents. Crazy and wonderful!

We no longer check our sailmail address with any regularity. The best way to reach us is at jannac9@hotmail.com and gesare@aol.com. Hope this email finds you well.

Love,
Janna and Graeme
P.S. I just noticed that, after months of ignoring our poor blog, Graeme and I both got the bug to update it in the very same week. Weird. So, apologies if my blog repeats quite a bit of what Graeme's says. Oh well. Two perspectives... -JC

Hong Kong Holidays

Just thought we would give everyone a brief update on Dragonfly's whereabouts. She is currently located in Causeway Bay, at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht club. She sneaks out once and awhile (OK, last weekend was the first time in a long time) for a brief sail around the islands, where there is clean tropical water and the tradwinds are blowing.

Her crew is now hard at work on other things. Graeme spends most of his time working. He started a small consultancy in Hong Kong, called NavAsia. Visit www.navasia.com.hk if you want to see what he is up to. Once every few weeks he goes out racing on someone else's boat. Next week is the famous "round the island" race, which he will do on a very old Hobart boat called Fuzzy Duck.

Janna writes a lot, as is her tendency. She just had an article in Bluewater Sailing, and is to be published in a couple of short story anthologies. In her spare time she works on a book proposal that is now way overdue, and on a series of articles that BWS will run next year on how women deal with men on small boats. And she shops. Everyone does in Hong Kong, but lately Janna has spent a lot of time looking at large flowy clothing. Maternity calls, and she has answered.

(I thought that was a very clever way to announce the baby is en route. Currently she is somewhere in the Western Pacific, but due in Hong Kong April 2. Just less than a year after our arrival!)

Welcome, Ava Jane!

Just wanted to announce that my wonderful niece, Ava Jane Cawrse, was born on March 14, 2005, while we were cruising through the Philippines. It was so exciting to finally receive the email onboard, and I have since seen many photos on my hotmail account. She is beautiful! Amy and my bro are hanging out home, my mom says, doing well. We are so happy for them and looking forward to meeting our little niece as soon as we can. Congrats, John and Amy!
